The entire area is an example of informality. Casual attire is accepted just about anyplace you walk into. The key is to come dressed for comfort, including layers of clothing and comfortable, well-broken-in shoes.
Layered clothing is the easiest way to prepare for the changing mountain temperatures. Although the daytime can be hot and sunny, you should always be prepared for a sudden change in temperature as you travel into the mountains. The higher altitudes can be quite cool, even though the valley may be sultry. Even on hot days you can expect the evenings to cool off, so it is a good idea to keep a light jacket on hand, even during the summer months.
If you are unaccustomed to mountain weather, the biggest factor to prepare for is changeability. A warm day can turn chilly, almost within moments. A sunny day can turn to rain without warning. Count on temperatures at higher elevations being fifteen degrees cooler than in the towns at the foot of the mountains (like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge) even in summer. Because the main Smokies ridge line forms such a barrier, Tennessee and North Carolina often have entirely different weather patterns from each other. Rain, fog and mist are likely at any time of the year, so be prepared with a raincoat or poncho (umbrellas can be unhandy while touring). The presence of rain is a very real possibility in the Smoky Mountains, but with a little forethought it will not detract from the enjoyment of your vacation. The Smoky Mountain region has a four season climate, with winters being milder than our neighbors to the north. It is not uncommon to see flowers in bloom at Thanksgiving time, with spring flowers beginning to appear in March. Major snow accumulation is infrequent, but not unheard of. Primary roads are cleared quickly, but winding mountain roads can pose a danger to those unfamiliar with such driving conditions.
